Visit of the President of Kiribati in French Polynesia (Papeete, 10 February)

The Vice-President of French Polynesia met the President of Kiribati.

The Vice-President of French Polynesia Mr Teva Rohfritsch, on behalf of President Edouard Fritch who was on an official visit in Paris, met with the President of Kiribati, Mr Taneti Maamau on 10 February in Papeete on the occasion of his first official visit to French Polynesia aboard the Kiribati patrol boat "Teanoai".

The meeting, which was attended by the minister of Line and Phoenix Islands Development, Mr Mikarite Temari and the minister of Social Affairs, Youth and Women, Mr David Collins, focused on the bilateral and regional themes of cooperation, and strengthened the relations of friendship between the two countries which share a long common maritime boundary and face the same challenges related to climate change, sea level rise and sustainable development constraints.

The prospects for enhanced cooperation in the fields of fisheries, protection of ocean, tourism, air transport and sports were also discussed.

With regard to the regional policy, the President of Kiribati welcomed the admission of French Polynesia as a full member of the Pacific Islands Forum during the last summit of the PIF in September 2016 in Honiara and the Vice-President Teva Rohfritsch also reiterated the acknowledgement of French Polynesia for the full support of Kiribati for this approach.

The delegation of Kiribati was welcomed, at the naval base of Papeete on February 10th, by the government spokesman, Mr Jean-Christophe Bouissou, Minister of Housing.
